Friday Feature -- Beaded Tail

This week's featured Etsy artist is Beaded Tail, who is also the Etsyblogger of the month for June! Congratulations!

I love the focus on animals in this shop, as well as the charitable focus. Isn't this Lucky Ladybug bracelet precious?

Enjoy the interview!

1. To which Etsy Teams do you belong (if any)?

I'm a member of two fabulous teams - the EtsyBloggers and the Etsy Angels.

2. Please tell me about the items in your Etsy shop. What do you make? How did you learn your craft? What is involved in your creative process?

I make beaded jewelry with many items having an animal related theme whether it's cat face beads, dog charms, paw toggles or butterflies. I learned how to make jewelry in 2007 after my mom took a class a beading class and subsequently taught me. My creative process involves seeing something or thinking of a new design and then I mull it over in my head for a few hours or a few days before sitting down and attempting to make it. Creativity doesn't come easy for me but I'm working on tapping into my creative side every day!

3. Tell me two (or more) other interesting things about you.

My day job is a CPA and I live in Oregon but work in Colorado thanks to the ability to telecommute. I'm married to my high school sweetheart for nearly 22 years and we have two cats, Angel and Isabella, and a husky, Sadie, who always make us smile! My husband and I love exploring Oregon's beautiful coast, trails, waterfalls and mountains.

4. What inspires your creations?

I often see a jewelry design and figure out a way that I can make it or something similar. My latest necklace was inspired by seeing a singer wearing a similar necklace on a TV appearance. I have too much left brain so it's hard for me to envision things from scratch so most always I have to see a style or design and then work my way towards it.

5. How did you get involved with Etsy?

After my mom taught me how to bead, I ended up making enough bracelets to cover my arms from wrist to elbow so I knew I either needed to stop beading or sell them. While doing a Google search on animal beads I came across an Etsy shop for the first time and checked into it a bit further and here I am today!

6. What is your biggest challenge related to your Etsy shop?

Finding time to make new things. Between work, my blog, family and just the desire to be outside sometimes, it's hard to sit down and make new items.

7. What is your favorite item in your shop (currently for sale or previously sold)? Why is it your favorite?

This is the necklace similar to the one I saw on a singer on TV. It took me about a week to get the nerve up to sit down and try to make it but once I did, I absolutely love how it turned out:

8. What advice do you have for other folks selling or buying on Etsy?

For sellers, keep track of your income and expenses! Not only does it help at tax time but you should always know your bottom line to make sure your prices are set accordingly. As an accountant, I guess this is what I always think about and I know the struggles of trying to determine Cost of Goods Sold and Inventory amounts at the end of the year so keeping up on it makes things so much easier.

For buyers, you can't go wrong with buying homemade but because of the nature of buying online, if you have any questions or can't determine a size, color, etc. from the pictures and description provided, contact the seller for more information. My experience has been that they will gladly help you with your questions so you get exactly what you expect.

9. What crafting skill(s) do you wish you had or hope to learn someday?

I would love to learn how to knit and my grandma had taught me how to crochet when I was a kid so I want to refresh my memory on that too. I recently caught the scrapbooking bug and want to learn more about working with paper too.

10. What has been your biggest success and/or proudest moment since opening your Etsy shop?

Since my Etsy shop was opened to help raise money for animal charities, I'm very proud of donating approximately $1,200 to various charities to date!

11. Where else can we find out more about you and/or your creations?

I blog daily at http://beadedtail.blogspot.com
I'm on flickr at http://www.flickr.com/BeadedTail
Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/BeadedTail

Friday Feature -- Handmade by Sandi

This week's featured Etsy artisan at Mama's Magic, cross-posted for your reading pleasure, is also the Etsyblogger of the Month for May! Congrats to Sandi, who runs two great Etsy shops: Handmade by Sandi and Sandi's Stash.

It had been a while since I visited Sandi's shop, and I was pleased to see many new items -- particularly these Coffee Cozies! What a great idea! I thought this lemon yellow Coffee Cozy with flower was especially nice.

Enjoy the interview!

1. To which Etsy Teams do you belong?

Etsybloggers - of course
Etsytwitter Team
Hoarders Unite

2. Please tell me about the items in your Etsy shop. What do you make? How did you learn your craft? What is involved in your creative process?

I love to make a little of a lot of things. I've always loved to work with yarn, and while I don't knit, I love to crochet. Making hats and scarves, I'd really like to try my hand at fingerless gloves too. But the crocheting led me to a new 'obsession' of felted bowls. I learned how to crochet from my mom when I was much younger! I also love to make earrings, and I love to sew as well.

3. Tell me two (or more) other interesting things about you.

I'm married to a wonderful guy, who adores me :D Between us with have 6 children and 10 grandchildren. We are both retired from the 'real' world and that allows me to have time to make things I love for my shops.

4. What inspires your creations?

other Etsy shops - I see such wonderful work that I want to try it myself. I look for patterns that I can try or ideas that I might want to incorporate in what I make.

5. How did you get involved with Etsy?

That's a really good question. In thinking back, I thought it would be a good way of getting more exposure for my website Sandi's T's - but it took off in a completely different direction, creating items that I don't sell on my website - as well as giving me a chance to work on things that I love without having to make them over and over again!

6. What is your biggest challenge related to your Etsy shop?

Time! I'm a retired lady, and I never have enough time... I am constantly doing updates with my business website, and often don't have the time to make items for my shop, take pictures of them, or talk about them. And I love to write, so I'm always blogging.

7. What is your favorite item in your shop? Why is it your favorite?

That seems to change over time, but if I had to pick my favorite for right now, it would be this lacy shawl -- it was a new pattern, and I love the color and the way it came out. My dear friend Sharon was willing to model it for me.

8. What advice do you have for other folks selling or buying on Etsy?

Hang in there - it takes a lot of time to get noticed, and start selling. Read the emails that Etsy sends out, and join a group or two - groups are a great way to get exposure for your shop.

9. If you had a gift certificate to Etsy for any one item you wanted, what would you buy? (Please provide a link.)

YARN!! I have several Etsy shops that I buy yarn from:

http://www.etsy.com/shop/dyeforsocks1965
http://www.etsy.com/shop/crochetgal
http://www.etsy.com/shop/HeartstringsbyDee

10. Where else can we find out more about you and/or your creations?

blog - http://www.sandists.com/Wordpress/
website - http://www.sandists.com
twitter - http://twitter.com/HandmadeBySandi
twitter - http://twitter.com/SandisStash
facebook - http://www.facebook.com/craftysandi

11. Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about your shop or your work?

Yes, in honor of my birthday - which is in May - I'm having a HUGE BIRTHDAY BASH in my handmade shop - where everything is 50% off the purchase price! I want to make room for new items!!

Congrats again, Sandi -- and happy birthday!

Some Taurus Birthdays

Taurus isn't necessarily like a Bull in a ring with a toreador. You could be more like peace-loving Ferdinand, seeking the gentle meadows filled with flowers, sunshine and natural beauty. It's only Taurus stubbornness that can make you angry enough to charge at someone who is disturbing your peace.

Are you a Taurus? Then you share your birthday with some of our Etsybloggers!! Send 'friendly' peace-loving wishes to the following:

MiniMondays: Sunshinedaydreamz

This month’s MiniMonday featured shop is “Sunshinedaydreamz” http://sunshinedaydreamz@etsy.com. The shop is owned by Beth, a wife and a stay-at-home mom to 3 great kids, and a true California girl from SanDiego.
To fill in her time at home while watching her 3 children (I admit I don’t know many mothers with 3 children who have any time all!) but, Beth always seemed to have the need to be creative, working with her hand. She soon became obsessed with home decorating, painting and gardening... and after taking jewelry lessons, her passion turned to jewelry!
True to her California roots, her other passion is going to the beach, which she refers to as her “sunshine daydream” hence the name of her shop. Looking at Beth’s jewelry, she artfully has everything displayed as if we were walking along the beach with her. Her “rockin’” handcrafted earrings, necklaces, and bracelets which consist of gemstones, glass, crystal, silver copper and leather, are all beautifully laid across the many seashells I imagine she must find during one of her many “daydreaming” strolls along the beach. Beth’s jewelry not only includes pieces for women, but has designs for men also.
Beth’s other shop: OldSkoolCool@etsy.com , is filled with fun vintage items such as vintage jewelry, bikes, skateboards, and music, which she describes as “old school stuff”.
Besides being a member of http://www.etsy.com/profile.php?user_id=5190440the EtsyBloggers, Beth is also a member of (CCCOE) CaliforniaCraftersClub of Etsy. After you visit the many beautiful pieces of jewelry in her “daydreamz” shop, and all the various vintage “old school” items from her other shop; you can find out more about Beth on her blog” http://beth-sunshinedaydreamz.blogspot.com/
